Michael Seaman signs with Tennessee Volunteers!

May 15, 2008

Bardstown, Kentucky

This week will certainly be an exciting one for members of Bardstown High School’s Track team, especially for Michael Seaman. Not only will the team host its first meet on the newly renovated Garnis Martin Field, but they will also have the opportunity to push the limits against none too shabby competition. “We’re real excited to get that quality of competition to come out here, it’s a tribute to the male athletes and what they’ve been able to accomplish,” Coach Tom Williams said.

Monday’s meet is against Louisville’s Trinity High School which was class 3A state champion last year, and St. Xavier High School the class 3A state champion runner-up. The Bardstown track team was class A state champion last year.

The meet will start at 5 p.m. and will feature 18 events including several track races ranging from 100 -3,200 meter and six field events including: shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault.

One of the team’s featured athletes is Michael Seaman a senior. He is a top state pole-vaulter who has cleared 15 feet, three inches and will compete for University of Tennessee next year. Michael says, "There are sooo many things, but mainly it is understanding the vault. I have really tried to become a student of the sport. Here in KY without any indoor facilities around I don\'t get a chance to vault all that much, so being mentally prepared has been key. Last year after Mason-Dixon I went through a slump, mainly because I was immature and thought I knew the event more than I did... this year that won\'t happen, and that is a reason I am jumping better now. I also have a great vault coach, and many other people I have contacted for questions and suggestions. I am much stronger, and my form is much better. An example of this is the poles that I am using, last year the biggest pole I used was a 14\'6" 160 lbs. and when I got up on it I felt like a savage beast! This year the biggest one I am on is a 15\'6" 165 lbs., and I know I am going to need bigger ones soon. I also think that the better I get the more greedy I feel, I always want the next PR height (15\'6" May 7, 2007) every time I jump... so that motivation keeps me in it."
