iHigh hosts First Annual Broadcasting Camp featuring Tom Leach

August 17, 2009
By iHigh Staff of Kentucky

iHigh.com hosted the First Annual iHigh Broadcasting Camp featuring Tom Leach this past Saturday, August 15th. High school students, college students, and experienced broadcasters were in attendance and excited for a very informative and fun day of honing their skills as sports broadcasters. Tom Leach, ‘Voice of The Wildcats' served as the moderator, and spoke in great length as to how he got his start in the business, as well as pointers and tips that he learned from the legendary Cawood Ledford in his early beginnings on local radio. Speakers also included Neil Price, the voice of UK Women's Basketball and Baseball, Randy Phillips from IMG College who serves as Broadcast Center Manager for a number of schools and as the voice of the Georgetown Tigers. Dick Gabriel from IMG College also contributed his experiences as a broadcaster, which includes work for the NCAA, Kentucky Baseball and Basketball, TV sportscasting at WKYT, and host of Sports Nightly that currently airs on WLAP. Campers were also treated to some advice and input from Bill Whitaker of iHigh.com who has been broadcasting local sports on the high school level for over 20 years. There were legendary calls presented, a chance to have the students call a section of a collegiate game that will be critiqued by Tom Leach, and a visit from former University of Kentucky Head Men's Basketball Coach Joe B. Hall. Coach Hall gave insight as to the proper way to conduct interviews and also spoke about his current position as a call-in host along with Denny Crum that can be heard on 19 stations in the area. As the day came to an end, campers had plenty of time to interact and ask questions to this All-Star team of sportscasters. More details to follow on iHigh.com for future camps in your area.
